Cushing syndrome

Cushing syndrome is a disease that occurs when your body produces too much of the hormone cortisol . It may also occur if you take too much cortisol or other steroid hormones.See also : Cushing 's disease -LRB- pituitary Cushing 's -RRB- Cushing syndrome caused by adrenal tumorCushing syndrome - exogenousEctopic Cushing syndrome

Symptoms
Treatment depends upon the cause.Cushing syndrome caused by corticosteroid use : Slowly decrease the drug dose -LRB- if possible -RRB- under medical supervision.Cushing syndrome caused by a pituitary tumor or tumor that releases ACTH : Surgery to remove the tumorRadiation after removal of a pituitary tumor -LRB- in some cases -RRB- Hydrocortisone -LRB- cortisol -RRB- replacement therapy -LRB- after surgery , and sometimes continued throughout the patient 's life -RRB- Cushing syndrome due to an adrenal tumor : Surgery to remove the tumorIf the tumor cannot be removed , medications to help block the release of cortisol When you have a pituitary tumor for Cushing's the tumor is comprised of ACTH.
Treatment
The most common cause of Cushing syndrome is side effects from taking anti - inflammatory steroid medications for conditions such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. The second most common cause is Cushing 's disease , which occurs when the pituitary gland makes too much of the hormone ACTH . ACTH stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol.Cushing 's disease affects women more often than men.Cushing syndrome can also be caused by the following : Tumor of the pituitary gland or adrenal glandTumor elsewhere in the body -LRB- ectopic Cushing syndrome -RRB- Actually with pituitary Cushing's (as opposed to an ectopic source) ACTH usually is not super-high. Cushing’s: The term “Cushing’s Disease” refers to the overproduction of cortisol by the adrenal glands caused by a pituitary tumor producing an excessive amount of the pituitary hormone, ACTH.
Causes
Blood sugar and white blood cell counts may be high . Potassium level may be low.Laboratory tests are done to confirm high cortisol level . Cortisol testing for Cushing's includes collection of 24 hour urine free cortisol, free cortisol levels measured in saliva samples and midnight blood cortisol collections. These include : Blood test to check cortisol levelDexamethasone suppression testUrine tests to check cortisol levelsTests to determine the cause may include : Abdominal CTACTH testPituitary MRI
Tests & diagnosis
Removing the tumor may lead to full recovery , but there is a chance that the condition will return.Survival for people with ectopic tumors depends on the tumor type . Untreated , Cushing syndrome can be life - threatening .
Prognosis
DiabetesEnlargement of pituitary tumorFractures due to osteoporosisHigh blood pressureKidney stonesSerious infections I had a lot of blood work that all came back "normal" - CBC with differential, TSH, T4, sed rate, and cortisol and another one that has to do with the pituitary (the last two have to do with Cushing's).
Complications
Call your health care provider if you have symptoms of Cushing syndrome . Has anyone ever had symptoms of Cushing's Syndrome when taking HRT? Sometimes other conditions may be associated with many of the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome.

It's called Crohn's Disease...an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that is also autoimmune related.
That's why you see all these little (old) ladies in their late 60's, 70's, and 80's skinner than most of us who are in our 40's-50's!!!
High blood presssure is not typically a symptom of addison's as far as I know, typically it presents with low blood pressure (however, that does not mean that Cushing's -- which is the opposite of addison's disease -- does not present with high blood pressure

I had an Bahr's test and an ENG to test for Meniere's disease - a sort of glacoma of the ear.

I'm currently being tested for Cushing's disease and although there's no known MEN1 in my family, there is hyperparathyroidism, unexplained pancreatitis, pseudogout and other conditions that can be caused by MEN1.
With Graves' Disease it's the antibodies that cause the thyroid to become hyper...I'm not sure about Hashimoto's disease.
